ABUSO DE ALCOHOL Y VIOLENCIA DOMÉSTICA DESDE UNA PERSPECTIVA DE GÉNERO
Gemma Altell Albajes, Montserrat Plaza Aleu
This article intends to establish a relationship between drug abuse and
family violence from a psychosocial viewpoint, focussing on gender. This point of
view affects all social areas, becoming a common issue in other social problems
such as drug dependence. Men are often attributed more aggressive and violent
roles than women. Gender is a social construction that should disappear in contexts
in which it has a discrimination function. Women keep on starting using
drugs massively. However, there are differences in attitudes, behaviours and social
perception about consumption in men and women. The issue of alcoholism is often
approached in a biased way, focussing on gender. Alcohol can be seen as an excuse
in men or as an aggravating fact in the victim, thus causing a double victimisation. Therefore, in any attempt of intervention with both concomitant problems,
previous judgements about gender should be revised.
