José A. García del Castillo, Carmen López Sánchez y Mª del Carmen Quiles Soler
Alcohol consumption is considered one of the most important
problems of public health in the western societies, that it generates diverse
problems at physical, psychological and social level. The aim of this
paper is three-fold: first, to know the alcohol consumption behaviours
among the youngsters and to compare it with the consumption at
national level; secondly, to verify the attitudinal trend of the sample in
relation with alcohol, in order to predict the trend consumption in the
studied population; and, in third, to identify the principal values among
the people belonging to our sample, as well as the perceived values
associated with the other students.
Our sample is compound by 1.500 university students (first and
second cycle), registered in someone of the degree courses offered by the
Public Universities of the Province of Alicante during the academic year
2004-2005, of both gender, with ages included between 17 and 28 years
or more. They are distributed in the following sections: Engineering and
Technology, Social and Juridical Sciences, Health Sciences, Experimental
Sciences and Humanities. Data was collected with an ad-hoc questionnaire
composed by five thematic differentiated blocks: socio-demographics
characteristics, mass-media consumption, substance use and misuse,
values and attitudes.
