New trends on drug abuse prevention
Guillermo A. Castaño
Prevention of psychoactive substances use and abuse is one of the
priorities in Public Health and an important need for many communities
and groups in risk.
The results that have been obtained with the programs already developed
are not representative, since prevalence and incidence indexes of
consumption-abuse of alcohol and other drugs have increased.
People insist permanently on the need of evaluating proposals and
supporting them on a scientific theoretical basis. Everyday more and
more programs follow these recommendations, however something is
still not working. The answer could be found in the strategies and methodologies
that are used for specific groups of people and adequate to
social and cultural contexts. The search for these new and successful
experiences, strategies and methodologies has become a worry of the
experts on the topic.
The aim of this article is to review some non-conventional methodologies
and strategies that have been used in prevention of consumption
and abuse of alcohol and other psychoactive substances, and the new
trends that are showing up, some of them still without being evaluated,
but that because of being a novelty are worth to be followed and taken
into account.
In this article, the following strategies are reviewed: culturally appropiate
interventions related to alcohol consumption, video games and
interactive games, movies and short story readings, prevention through
cell phones, prevention in recreation environments, prevention mobile
units and internet.
